Here we are at the Central Prison in Cherlapally on the outskirts of Hyderabad. This correctional facility is nowhere what one imagines a normal jail is, from the movies we watch. Built on 43 acres of land, it has the capacity to hold 1500 inmates, with staff quarters for officers and staff. After the mandatory washing of hands just outside the main gates, we are driven into the industrial complex in the jail? An industrial complex in a jail? Yes, it’s true. Not just some basic carpentry or kitchen garden, but a facility that produces Sanitisers, Phenyls, Masks, Soaps, Steel furniture, power looms, Clothes among others. This becomes all the more important in these days when the nation is fighting the pandemic on all fronts.
Take the sanitizer unit where convicts manually fill in high-quality sanitizer produced in a huge steel tank and put a locking cap it, and put a sticker on the bottle under My Nation brand name and then pack it. The entire process is manually done, as we see in the black phenyl manufacturing unit. Here the black phenyl is heated and transferred into a drum, and then filled into bottles.
Another unique feature of this industrial unit is Soap manufacturing, which starts with raw material that is rolled out and then cut into pieces and then shaped in a pressing machine and packed. The soap is of very good quality and in high demand. And yes, the process is totally manual, here too all done by the inmates of the Cherlapally jail.
Another unit which is very busy these days are the tailors who are stitching up high-quality cloth masks. The process starts with the cutting of the mask based on a design and then stitched with the elastic clasps. It’s a slow and painstaking process, but like the final heat press that is done to kill any possible germs, it's as professional as you can get.
The steel furniture unit makes products for use by govt departments and now is busy making beds for government hospitals.
The power loom unit in the jail makes excellent cloth material which are converted into sheets for use in various units.
