Will pollen allergy become more severe due to climate change? Spring marks the start of the pollen season, a challenging time for allergic people.

Allergic reactions are caused by the immune system that reacts to specific substances, like pollen. The immune system falsely thinks that these substances are dangerous and therefore gets in "defence mode". There is no clear evidence that allergy is genetic.

As CO2 levels increase, temperatures rise, enabling trees, grasses and weeds to produce pollen for a longer period of time. Research projects that by 2060 the amount of grass pollen will double, therefore hitting allergic persons harder each season.

Pollen of grass, weeds and trees are the main sources for outdoor allergies. Grass pollen are by far the most severe, hitting 1 out of 5 British.
