It would be ‘ageist’ to extend COVID-19 lockdown for UK’s elderly

It would be ‘ageist’ to extend COVID-19 lockdown for UK’s elderly Forcing older people to stay home as the lockdown is lifted for everyone else would be 'discriminatory', says Baroness Altmann. The former pensions minister dismisses the idea that requiring elderly people to self-isolate for a longer period would protect them, saying ‘a healthy 70-year-old is less of a risk’ going out than ‘an unhealthy 40-year-old’. Describing lockdown as a kind of ‘house arrest’, she argues that people would never accept the idea of forcing only BAME people to stay home even though they are also falling victim to COVID-19 in greater proportions.
