Two days after China recorded its first Covid-19 death in January, the New Jersey state Senate tried for a second time to pass legislation that would eliminate a loophole that has allowed thousands of students to refuse vaccines on religious grounds.
That day, thousands of opponents, citing religious freedom even though few religions are opposed to vaccines, chanted outside the Senate chambers, banged on the chamber’s doors and windows and called out senators individually. Their effort worked, and the Senate ended its session one vote short of the 21 needed to pass the bill that would eliminate the religious exemption.
